When Erik XIV was crowned king in 1561, he introduced the noble titles of count and baron to the Swedish nobility.
Previously, the only title that had existed was "knight", which gave the holder the right to call himself "lord" and his wife called "dame".
With Count and Baron, the titles of the Swedish nobility were extended. The new titles were largely a confirmation of the position they
already held within the kingdom, all were already the ones closest to the royal house.
