Sture murders

The Sture murders took place in Uppsala, Sweden, on 24 May 1567. During this event, five imprisoned Swedish nobles were killed by order of King Erik XIV. At the time, the king was suffering from a severe mental breakdown, and the killings were carried out with the help of his guards. Among the victims were three members of the powerful Sture family. They had been accused of plotting against the king, and some had already received death sentences. After the first killings, Erik XIV’s former tutor Dionysius Beurræus, who was not involved in the alleged conspiracy, attempted to calm the king but was also killed.
