The Gherardini family was exiled from Florence three times, the first time it is mentioned that a certain Gherardino left Florence with his three sons: Tommaso, Gherardo and Maurizio. Originally they left for France and were in service of King Louis VII of France but later moved to England and joined the court of Henry II of England from whence they went to Ireland and participated in the Anglo-Norman conquest. The Windsor and their cadets FitzGeralds (including FitzMaurice, FitzGibbon, etc.) and Carews are said to all being descended from them i.e. more specifically from a certain Otho Gherardini presumably descendant of the mentioned Gherardino and/or one of his three sons.  -->
