William being the eldest succeeded his mother as Earl of Dumfries in 1742. His younger brother James succeeded their father as Earl of Stair in 1747 but died in 1760 without issue so William succeeded him as well, however William himself died without issue so the titles became separated once again...Earldom of Stair passing to his cousin John Dalrymple (son of George Dalrymple of Dalmahoy who himself was 3rd son of 1st Earl of Stair and also a younger brother of 2nd Earl) while Earldom of Dumfries passed to his nephew by his sister Elizabeth who married John MacDouall/MacDowall of Freugh -->
