<!-- The 10th Lord Byres was created Earl of Lindsay in 1633 and eventually in 1642 granted Earldom of Crawford due to his cousin's  forfeiture of his title. The main line of Byres then continues until 4th Earl of Lindsay i.e. 20th Earl of Crawford upon which he died without children. The line then goes back to line of a younger son of 1st Earl of Lindsay/17th Earl of Crawford to Viscounts Garnock. The line of Garnock ends with 6th Earl of Lindsay who died without children in 1808. All titles go into abeyance. Earl of Balcarres (by way of younger son of 9th Earl of Crawford) puts forward the claim on Earldom of Crawford in 1843 and is recognized as Earl of Crawford by the House of Lords in 1848. The titles of Earldom of Lindsay, Viscount Garnock and Lord Byres went 'de jure' to line of Kirkforthar but since both 'de jure' Earls (7th and 8th) died without children ending the Kirkforthar line, the claim was pushed back to Henry Lindsay-Bethune, 1st Baronet of Kilconquahar (Wormiston branch) and his son the 2nd baronet was eventually confirmed as Earl of Lindsay in 1878 since he was the eldest and sole male inheritor of Byres. So since death of 4th Earl of Lindsay the line "devolved" from youngest and closest line to elder and more distant branches. -->
