<!-- The arms of first 4 Barons Howard of Effingham (and first 3 Earls of Nottingham) seem unsettled or rather unstandardized. It is only with 5th Baron (who is a cousin of 4th Baron and 3rd Earl of Nottingham descended from a younger brother of 1st Baron) that the arms seem settled on standard Howard quarters differentiated by a mullet (five-pointed star). After the death of 10th Baron (also 4th Earl of Effingham), the line again reverted to yet another junior line, this time to that of younger brother of 5th Baron Howard of Effingham...thus from 11th Baron (created 1st Earl of Effingham of the 2nd creation in 1837) the arms used by the branch is the simple augmented arms of Howard from 1513 -->
