Talk:House of Onads
This page is as far as I can tell based entirely on bad information. I have traced the arms back to a funerary portrait of the Polish nobleman Jan z Ujazd, made for the church of Czchow which he benefacted (subsequently taken to Lviv, and finally Cracow). See here and also here for further information. Romanian authors have not only made him into a Wallachian but changed the date "1450" into "1150", giving us this mythical Voivode of Onut (a misreading of the name O(g)nads, which is in fact merely Ujazd Latinized). A 19th century engraving based on the portrait does identify the figure not only as capitaneus Czchoviensis but also as dux Valachiae; however, this does not seem to be part of the original painting, and may anyway indicate authority over the Vlachs of southern Poland.
