The 4th Earl later died childless in exile. The estates then went to his nephew (son of his younger brother Henry who was styled the 5th Earl in Jacobite peerage) who did not reverse the attainder but was created Baron and Viscount Maule and 1st Earl Panmure in 1743, but he too died without issue and was succeeded by his sister Jean who married George Ramsay, eldest son of William Ramsay, 6th Earl of Dalhousie who preceded his father by several months. George Ramsay was the father of 7th and 8th Earl of Dalhousie and the Panmure estates devolved upon the younger son of 8th Earl who assumed additional name and arms of Maule and was also created Baron Panmure, see cadet branches -->
