This is the earliest variant of the arms. Later variants of the arms continued in the illegitimate line of Brechin and Wishart showed the piles '''conjoined''' or '''in point''', [https://archive.org/details/generalarmoryofe00burk/page/118/mode/2up?view=theater see here] and [https://archive.org/details/generalarmoryofe00burk/page/1124/mode/2up?view=theater here]. Meaning the piles now converged on a single point at the bottom. The variant with two piles (also conjoined) stems from a 1800s portrait of Dervorguilla of Galloway, showing erroneous version the arms in number and style of the piles.
