<!-- Originally Petty Kings and Princes of Osraige, they submitted to Henry VIII Tudor in 1541 and were re-granted part of their lands under the title "Baron Upper Ossory". The title was forfeited in 1691 after the 7th Baron sided with James II during the "Glorious Revolution". 7th Baron and his immediate successors (sons of his younger brother) all died without issue and the inheritance reverted to a line from the younger son of the 3rd Baron...this line was elevated to peerage in 1715 as Barons Gowran and then Earls of Upper Ossory, the title Baron Upper Ossory was also re-granted (basically restored) to 2nd Earl in 1794, however he died without legitimate issue in 1818 and the titles became extinct. The 2nd Earl had an illegitimate son who inherited Castletown and was created "Baron Castletown" in 1869. The earlier branches of Akipe are said to be cadets of this family before they submitted to Henry VIII while the branch of Clonturk/Drumcondra are cadets issued from James, younger son of John FitzPatrick of Castletown himself the younger son of Florence FitzPatrick, 3rd Baron Ossory. Arms of this family was "sable, a cross saltire argent"...the chief azure charged with three fleurs-de-lys is an augmentation awarded by Henry II of France sometime after 1552 where the future 2nd Baron served as an ambassador (1551-1552) to Edward VI in France, although he himself succeeded to the barony only 1576, the arms with augmentation was thus adopted and continued by his younger brother (who succeeded him) and his descendants.  -->
