An order of chivalry founded by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, a prince of the House of France. It became one of the most prestigious orders of Europe.<br>After the extinction of the Valois Dukes of Burgundy, the sovereignty of the order passed into the Head of the Spanish branch of the House of Habsburg, who was also the King of Spain and claimed the title "Duke of Burgundy".<br>After the extinction of the Spanish Habsburgs, the order split into a Spanish branch, headed by the Bourbon King of Spain, and an Austrian branch, headed by the Head of the House of Habsburg.
