In 239 AC, Lyonel Baratheon, the Lord of Storm's End and a leal friend of King Aegon V Targaryen, declared independence from the Iron Throne following a grave insult to his House.
Aegon V's eldest son and heir, Duncan Targaryen, was betrothed to Lord Baratheon's daughter, whom he spurned to marry the commonborn Jenny of Oldstones.
By rebelling, Lyonel resurrected the ancient title of "Storm King" which had last been used by his Durrandon ancestors before the Wars of Conquest.
The short and bloody conflict ended when Ser Duncan the Tall of the Kingsguard defeated Lyonel in single combat.
