The extinction of the Hellenstein family based in the castle also coincided with the fall of Hohenstaufen dynasty which held the nearby imperial possession of Heidenheim. Hellenstein thus became the center of the imperial lordship of Heidenheim and was passed down shortly to Wurttemerg, then Wittelsbach and then again fell to newly created Duchy of Wurttemberg with which it remained joined -->
