He tried to kill his father in 1537 and was thus disinherited by his father the 8th Earl who then chose his distant cousin David Lindsay, 3rd of Edzell to succeed him...this David thus became the 9th Earl, however he (9th Earl) then decided that the son of disinherited Alexander would succeed him and would thus return the Earldom back to the main line -->
