Robert himself was Earl of Atholl before becoming king, then it went to his grandson (son of Robert III) who was also Duke of Rothesay and crown prince but preceded his father. The title then went to 3rd son of Robert II who died without issue and lastly Walter Stewart who was the youngest son of Robert II who was attained and executed. The title after that went to a different branch of Stewart family, Lords Balveny -->
