On House of Valois-Anjou

  • they were not Counts of Valois, since that territory belonged to Valois-Orleans
  • Valois.svg is nonetheless a convenient coat of arms for the first of the Valois-Anjou, Duke Louis, who was the only one to use it (his descendants use more elaborate arms)
  • Not all branches of the Capetian dynasty shifted to France modern; among those who retained France ancient are Valois-Burgundy and Valois-Anjou.

Valois-Anjou, continued

  • Still, I could find no source for the claim that Valois-Anjou used the plain, modern variant of Anjou, except in the form of an escutcheon in Rene's arms
    • Just because Rene used an escutcheon of Anjou Modern doesn't mean that he also used the plain arms of Anjou Modern
  • it is highly unlikely for his descendants to use a version of the arms plainer than their living ancestor (Rene outlived both his son and grandson)
  • Jean d'Anjou.svg, showing the arms of Rene's son, is differenced by a label

...

  • The problem is that there is no source for it. If you could find at least one instance of Rene using the plain arms of Anjou, not merely as an escutcheon, then there is no problem.
    • As such, he may or may not have used the plain arms of Anjou modern. It is more probable, however, that he never used it in that form, since his historically-documented arms were all complex.
